Neural DSP Archetype Cory Wong X for macOS

Description

You plug in a Strat, load the plugin in your DAW, and dial in a tone that sits just shy of breaking up, with a compressor clamping the peaks and a hint of room reverb.

Formats — 64-bit VST2, VST3, AU, AAX, plus a standalone app. It runs on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs back to macOS 10.13.

Hosts — Standalone means no DAW required. The app includes a metronome for practice. When you do load it in a host, it slots into any major DAW that reads one of the supported formats.

What it sounds like — The core amp model delivers glassy cleans and that edge-of-breakup territory where a pick attack pushes the signal just enough. The wah, transpose and doubler effects sit before the amp. The transpose function handles pitch shifts cleanly. The doubler thickens a single take without obvious phasing.

Cabinets — Three cabinets house 324 impulse responses. Six virtual microphones let you move and blend the mic positions. You can load your own IRs if you prefer a different cabinet flavour. The new room reverbs in version 1.0.1 add more space options than the original release.

The X update also brought a redesigned interface and 133 new presets. Worth a look if you need a focused clean-platform plugin that handles its own cabinet simulation.

Common beginner slip-ups

Grabbing the gain knob on The Amp Snob and winding it past noon, expecting a pushed-Marshall snarl. That model stays clean almost to the end of its travel — you get a thicker clean, not dirt. If you want grit, stick The Big Rig Overdrive in front instead.

Leaving the built-in cab block on while feeding the signal into an external IR loader. It doubles the speaker colouring and turns everything boxy. Bypass the cab section if you are using your own impulse responses downstream.

Ignoring the 9-band graphic EQ because the amp tone knobs feel more familiar. Those sliders can rescue a boomy neck pickup or add back the snap a dark IR takes away. Move them early, before you reach for a different cabinet.

Clean compression the Morello plugin can’t touch

Next to Archetype: Tom Morello — The Morello plugin leans harder into high-gain and effects tailor-made for dropped tunings and whammy pedal gymnastics. Cory Wong X stays in the clean-to-slightly-pushed lane, with a compressor that levels fingerstyle dynamics better than anything in the Morello collection.

Next to S-Gear — Scuffham S-Gear covers Fender-ish cleans convincingly, but the wah and the transpose/doubler section here give you performance tools S-Gear simply does not have. S-Gear's spring reverb has more drip; Cory Wong X counters with the new room reverbs and a more flexible cab section.

Next to Amplitube 5 (Fender collections) — Amplitube gives you a vast parts bin of amps and pedals, but you spend time auditioning combinations. Cory Wong X is a curated signal chain where the pieces were chosen to work together. Less choice, faster results — and the doubler effect sounds wider than Amplitube's stock double-tracker.
