Frostpunk for macOS
Description
The current build for Mac is 1927 (46330). It's the same release that lined up with full Steam support, so you're getting a mature version of the game — no early-access rough edges.

The game sets you in charge of the last city on Earth. A frozen wasteland is all you have, and the population looks to you for food, medical care, and laws that work. You decide work hours, how to treat the sick, and whether rule should lean on compassion, faith, or an iron fist. There is no gentle way through — every law passed and every resource spent leaves a mark. Performance on a decent Intel i7 MacBook Pro with a Radeon Pro 5300M or 560X is steady, provided you have 16 GB RAM and 10 GB of free storage. It won't run on Apple Silicon Macs unless you're using Rosetta and prepared for variable results.
M1/M2 compatibility and the Rosetta 2 answer
A few things come up in every help desk conversation about this game. Here are the answers without the fluff.
Does it run on an M1 or M2 Mac? Officially, no. The build is Intel x86 only. Rosetta 2 will translate it, and plenty of players report it works, but the developer hasn't signed off on Apple Silicon support. Expect the fan to kick in early on a MacBook Air. A 2020 M1 Air running Sonoma handled it, but that's one data point — your mileage depends on ambient temperature and how many background apps you've got open.
Why does it need such a chunky graphics card? The weather effects are not decoration. Snowstorms, shifting fog, and the glow of the generator all hit the GPU. The listed minimum — a Radeon Pro 5300M or 560X with 4 GB — isn't posturing. Integrated graphics will struggle once the city grows past a couple of hundred people. If someone looks up frostpunk torrent or frostpunk 2 mac torrent, matching those specs is the main thing to check so the app runs well.
Can I play it offline? Yes. The version here doesn't phone home. No activation servers, no always-online requirement. If you grabbed a frostpunk 2 free download from somewhere else that demands a connection, it's not this build.
Outrun starvation with a second scout team
The game teaches you the controls, then steps back. That's when the real learning starts. These tips won't win you the game, but they'll stop you losing it in the first three hours.
- Get the second scout team out by day 4. The first team will find survivors and a few resource piles. A second team doubles your reach before the first storm warning arrives. Delaying it means you'll hit the mid-game with half the map still dark.
- Don't build the fighting arena early. It calms discontent, but the wood and steel it eats could be a second medical post and more tents. Discontent can be managed with extended shifts and a well-placed promise; frostbite can't.
- Steam hubs beat generator range upgrades. Extending the generator's heat zone looks efficient. It's not. Steam hubs placed where workers gather cost less coal and let you shut off heat in empty districts during the day. That one switch saves more coal than most beginners think possible.
If you grabbed a frostpunk download torrent and jumped straight into the main scenario, the first storm will probably break you. That's normal. The game expects you to fail.
Mistakes that cost a run
Most restarts come from the same handful of errors. I saw the same patterns when students at the college would swap survival stories between lectures.
Treating the generator like a thermostat. Beginners crank the heat to comfortable the moment the temperature drops. Coal stockpiles vanish. Set the generator to the minimum that keeps tents from freezing, then use overdrive in short bursts during the night. The population can cope with "cold" for a day; they can't cope with zero coal when the storm hits.
Signing every law that unlocks. The law tree dangles enticing options — child shelters versus child labour, radical treatment versus care homes. Signing a law because it's available is how you end up with a city of amputees and a hope bar sitting at zero before the halfway point. Cooldown timers exist for a reason. Skip a cycle. Let the last law settle.
Forgetting the outpost teams. Once a scout reaches certain locations, you can set up an outpost that delivers a trickle of food, coal, or steel. New players leave scouts sitting idle at the city edge instead of converting them. A single coal outpost softens every mistake you make with the generator.
Building tents in a ring, blindly. The circular grid around the generator looks like it's meant to be filled evenly. It's not. Build in clusters where heat overlap from steam hubs makes sense, and leave the far edges for resource depots and other buildings that don't need warmth. Sick people in a distant tent are a drain you won't outrun.
