Hades for macOS
Description
Eleven interface languages; a single voice language (English).
Roguelike dungeon crawler — you control an immortal prince of the Underworld fighting to escape the realm of the god of the dead. Each run ends in death that sends you back to the start.
Olympian boons — Zeus, Athena, Poseidon and other gods offer dozens of ability upgrades during a run. You build a temporary loadout that vanishes when you die.
Meta-progression — after every attempt the prince grows permanently stronger and the story advances through fully voiced characters. Losses are not wasted.
Shifting bosses — the underworld guardians swap between runs, so you cannot rely on memorising a single pattern.
This setup rewards patience and a tolerance for repetition. If you enjoy learning enemy tells and experimenting with ability combos over many short sessions, the loop will hold you. The fully voiced cast and advancing story give you a reason to return beyond the combat.
It will frustrate anyone who wants a fixed difficulty curve, a single continuous playthrough, or a quiet game. Boon descriptions pop up mid-fight, characters never stop talking, and the screen gets busy fast.
Turn on damage numbers to see boon stacking
Launch the game, die once, then visit the pause menu. Two defaults are worth flipping immediately.
- Damage numbers. Turn them on under Display. The Olympian boons stack in ways that are not obvious from the visual effects alone. Seeing the digits rise lets you judge whether a new boon is actually pulling its weight — especially when you are comparing percentage-based upgrades from different gods.
- Cursor visibility. The mouse pointer hides itself during controller play. If you run the game with a trackpad or mouse in keyboard-and-mouse mode, bump up the cursor size so it does not vanish in the red-and-gold chaos of Asphodel.
After a few runs, look at the God Mode toggle. It is not a cheat. It gives you 20% damage resistance, rising by 2% each time you die, capping at 80%. The story and boon variety do not change. Useful if you want to see the full character arcs without mastering the dash timing for the third-stage boss.
Rosetta 2 keeps it cool, then the aluminum warms up
The game is an Intel binary, so it runs through Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon Macs. On an M1 Air it stays cool for the first hour, then the fans — well, there are none. The underside warms up. If you plan a long session, close Chrome and anything else chewing memory. The game holds a steady framerate at default settings; stability problems are rare once you are past the title screen.
It plays nicely with Mission Control. Swipe to another desktop while the House of Hades dialogue plays and the audio keeps running in the background. The game pauses automatically when you switch spaces during a run, which is handy if you need to check a build guide or reply to a message.
Controller support is wired directly into macOS. A PlayStation or Xbox controller recognised by the system will work without third-party drivers. Pair it before you launch the game — hot-plugging mid-run occasionally drops the input mapping. If you prefer keyboard, rebind the dash to a side mouse button. The default Shift key works, but your left hand is already busy on WASD.
Hades saves locally and does not touch iCloud. If you move between Macs, you will need to copy the save folder manually. A hades mac download from the usual places that includes the fixed build avoids version mismatches between machines.
Requirements
- macOS version: not specified
- Architecture: Intel (Apple Silicon runs via Rosetta 2)
FAQ
Which languages does Hades support on Mac?
The interface includes Russian, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, French and Japanese. The voice acting is English only.
Do I lose everything when I die?
No. Abilities from boons reset, but the prince gains lasting upgrades and the story progresses after each escape attempt.
Does the game run on Apple Silicon Macs?
The macOS build is listed as Intel architecture only, so Apple Silicon Macs will run it through Rosetta 2.
