Description

If you've used IntelliJ or PyCharm, CLion's layout will feel familiar immediately. It's JetBrains' C and C++ IDE, built on the same platform.

macOS 11+ on Intel or Apple Silicon

CLion runs on any Mac with macOS 11 or later. It supports both Intel and Apple Silicon processors.

What build systems does it handle?

CMake, Makefile, Meson and compilation databases are all supported. You can open a project, let CLion read the build config, and get going without hand-holding the toolchain.

What's the debugging experience like?

The debugger works with GDB and LLDB. You get watch expressions, Variables views, and on-the-fly code analysis that flags problems before you even hit compile.

Anything else that saves time?

Where CLion fits in your setup

CLion plays well with the tools you already have. Its terminal accepts local commands and SSH sessions, so a build server or Raspberry Pi on the network is one tab away. Git, SVN, Mercurial and Perforce all share one commit dialog, which saves you from switching between three different clients.

For testing, Google Test, Boost.Test and Catch run inside the IDE with their results listed per test. Doxygen comments appear in quick documentation pop-ups, so keeping headers documented stays a matter of typing /** and letting the template fill in.

On macOS, CLion respects the usual system conventions. The CMake profile can point at Homebrew-installed toolchains, and Xcode command line tools are picked up without extra configuration. If you keep a compile_commands.json around for other tools, CLion imports it directly.

Switch keymap to Xcode or VS Code shortcuts

A few defaults are worth adjusting before you write much code:

  • Keymap. If you came from Xcode or VS Code, switch to that keymap in Preferences. It's quicker than unlearning years of shortcuts.
  • Clang-Tidy checks. Enable a sensible subset under Editor → Inspections. The full set is noisy; start with bugprone and performance checks.
  • CMake profiles. Add a Debug and Release profile with different build directories. It stops you from accidentally shipping a debug binary.
  • File watchers. Turn off auto-sync for large projects on network drives. CLion can get chatty with file system events.
  • Code style. Import your team's .clang-format file so IDE formatting matches CI checks.

A clion torrent search might tempt you into an older build. The version here is current and activation comes with it, so if you do grab a cracked copy, just set the update channel to manual to avoid any conflicts.

The IDE generates constructors, destructors, getters, setters and comparison operators for you. A built-in terminal handles local and SSH remote commands without leaving the window.
