Sons Of The Forest for macOS
Description
Apple Silicon only, tested on an M4
This build is for Apple Silicon Macs. It was tested on a Mac mini M4 running macOS Tahoe. Intel Macs aren't supported by this ARM-only package.
Getting started
- Mount the disk image and drag the app to Applications.
- Launch it from Launchpad. If it throws an error, run the Fix file from the mounted disk image first.
- Open the settings menu to switch the interface language — there are fifteen to choose from.
Seasonal cycles and shifting cannibal patrols
The island runs on seasonal cycles. You'll chop trees, build shelters, and store meat for the winter. Cannibals patrol the forest; their behaviour shifts as the days pass. Performance on the M4 is solid, though you'll want to lower shadows and draw distance if you're on a passive-cooled MacBook Air. Controls work with keyboard and mouse out of the box. Endnight built this as a proper 1.0 release — five new cutscenes, an alternate ending, and a rewritten title sequence came with that February 2024 milestone.
Worth it if you want The Forest's smarter, colder sibling running natively on Apple Silicon.
Two builders sharing one cabin base
Co-op pairs who share a base. The island's threat scales with player count, but two people building separate wings of the same log cabin cuts the construction grind in half. One person fishes the stream while the other reinforces the spike wall. That rhythm clicks.
Solo players who treat winter as a genuine deadline. Spring and summer let you collect salmon from streams and stockpile berries. When the snow hits and lakes freeze over, you're living off what you stored. If you didn't store enough, the cannibals aren't your only problem. This seasonal pressure gives the game its spine — and it rewards the kind of person who keeps a mental tally of dried meat racks.
People who enjoyed The Forest but wanted less jank. Endnight tightened the building snap points and made cannibal patrols less predictable. If you bounced off the first game's rough edges, this one might stick.
The beach looks safe but isn't
- Building on the beach because it looks safe. Cannibals patrol the shoreline. They'll find you on night one. Head inland, find a cliff face, and put your back against rock.
- Ignoring the seasonal clock. You have two seasons of plenty, then winter locks down fresh food sources. A drying rack built in autumn doesn't help much. Get meat and fish drying by mid-summer.
- Sleeping without a shelter. The game won't warn you twice. If you pass out in the open, you wake up dragged somewhere worse. A basic lean-to takes four sticks and two minutes.
- Running the Fix file after the game already launched. The Fix is a one-time step from the disk image, before first launch. Running it again later does nothing and some people end up re-mounting the image unnecessarily.
- Hoarding every weapon you find. Inventory space is tight. Pick one melee weapon you like the swing speed on and stick with it. A spear and a crafted bow cover most encounters.
