Stoneshard for macOS
Description
This one is for players who like their fantasy medieval and their consequences permanent. You control a mercenary scraping through a war-torn kingdom, taking contracts and trying not to die from the next infected wound.
Runs natively on M-series Macs since Sequoia
Yes. The macOS build is compiled for Apple Silicon and was tested on an M1 MacBook Air. It requires macOS Sequoia.
What's the performance like?
Expect a steady frame rate on any Apple Silicon machine. It's a turn-based game with pixel-art visuals, not a GPU stress test, so the fans rarely spin up.
Is it finished?
No. Version 0.9.4.24 is an Early Access build. Core loops like combat, healing and character development are in place, but content is still being added.
One wrong move and your run is over
Death is quick and it hurts. Mistakes in combat snowball fast, and ironman mode makes every choice irreversible with permanent death if you toggle it on.
Things you'll wish you knew sooner
Right-click an enemy at the edge of your vision to inspect its health bar and buffs before committing to combat. The Examine window often reveals a trait that changes your whole approach.
You can rest outside dungeons by lighting a campfire with a flint and kindling in your inventory. Place it near a wall or tree line — exposure to wind slows the rest timer down more than you'd expect.
Holding Shift highlights every interactive object on screen. Traps, loose floorboards and lootable skeletons are easy to walk past when the torchlight is low.
The inventory has a sort button, but the real time-saver is the small backpack icon next to your belt slot. Click it to open a secondary container that stays on screen while you loot. Drag herbs and bandages there so you're not scrolling through a full pack mid-fight.
One mercenary bears every wound instead of a squad
Next to Battle Brothers, Stoneshard feels more personal. You manage one mercenary, not a whole company, so every limp and infected cut lands harder. Battle Brothers spreads its pressure across a squad; here the pressure sits entirely on you.
Stacked against Darkest Dungeon, the pacing is slower and more deliberate. Both punish greed, but Stoneshard punishes inattention to basic needs — hunger, pain, morale — rather than springing a party-wipe from a single bad round. It's a long grind downward, not a sudden collapse.
Compared to Gloomhaven on Mac, Stoneshard lacks the card-play precision but offers a wider overworld to wander. Gloomhaven feels like a board game ported to screen. Stoneshard feels like a roguelike that happens to use turn-based tactics. If you want to travel between towns with a half-empty waterskin and hope the next crossroads doesn't hold a bear, that's the difference.
If you've been waiting for a chance to download Stoneshard for Mac, this build gives you the full Early Access loop — just don't expect a gentle tutorial. The game assumes you'll learn by bleeding.
