Half Sword for macOS
Description
You swing a longsword in a muddy tourney ring. Your opponent stumbles, off-balance, and your follow-through catches his neck. The blow lands with no health bar, no flashy numbers — just physics, a spray of blood, and a body hitting the dirt. That is Half Sword.
- Built entirely around physics. Every weapon connects or glances based on momentum, angle and the weight of the armour it meets.
- Combat is slow, deliberate and punishing. Button-mashing gets you killed in seconds.
- The violence is extreme and unflinching. Dismemberment, exposed anatomy and arterial spray are the norm, not a rare finisher.
- Fights take place in a bleak, historically grounded 15th-century setting where you climb from commoner to knight.
- It is Early Access and rough around the edges. Expect bugs, uneven performance and controls that demand patience.
- No multiplayer, no story cutscenes — just you, a weapon, and the physics engine.
This is a sim for people who enjoy fighting as a problem to be solved, not a power fantasy. If you want a tight, responsive action game, Half Sword will frustrate you. If you find joy in mastering deliberately awkward controls and watching a clean decapitation land because you timed it just right, you will understand why it has an audience.
M4 Macs run the ARM build without Rosetta
Does this run natively on Apple Silicon? Yes — the build is ARM, wrapped with Wineskin. It ran without Rosetta on a Mac mini M4 during testing, and launch was straightforward once the disk image was mounted and the app dragged into Applications. Performance depends on your chip, but M-series Macs handle it decently at medium settings.
Is it really as gory as people say? It is worse. The physics engine models dismemberment and soft-tissue damage in detail that feels clinical rather than cartoonish. Limbs come off, torsos open, and blood pools on the ground. There is no slider to tone it down. If you share a screen with children or squeamish housemates, plan accordingly.
Do you need a controller? The game works with keyboard and mouse, but a controller feels more natural for the weighted, momentum-based swings. Mouse-look combat is usable — just less intuitive when you are trying to angle a poleaxe around a shield.
Can you run it from an external drive? Yes. The Wineskin wrapper is self-contained, so dragging the app onto a fast USB-C SSD works fine. Just expect slightly longer load times before a bout.
Aggression leaves you gutted during recovery frames
Treating it like an action game. Half Sword punishes aggression. New players swing wildly, empty their stamina, and get gutted during the recovery frames. The winning move in your first dozen fights is patience — wait for the opponent to overcommit, then punish with one clean strike.
Ignoring footwork. Movement is as important as the weapon. Beginners plant their feet and trade blows, which works until someone with a longer reach keeps you at the tip of their blade. Circle, backstep, and use the arena's mud and uneven ground to break the opponent's rhythm.
Skipping the Fix file. If the app throws an error on first launch, it is almost always a Wineskin path issue. The disk image includes a Fix file for this. Run it once and the problem disappears. Skipping this step leads to forum posts blaming the download, when the fix takes ten seconds.
Not finding the save files. Progress sits deep inside the app bundle at Half Sword.app/Contents/SharedSupport/prefix/drive_c/users/Sikarugir/AppData/Local/HalfswordUE5/Saved/SaveGames. If you ever need to back up your knight's career or move it to another Mac, that is where you go. Most players never look, then lose hours of progress when they delete the app.
