Timberborn for macOS
Description
Timberborn runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It arrived on macOS in September 2021 and chugs along fine on a 2024 M4 Mac mini under macOS Tahoe — no fiddly settings needed.
Mouse and keyboard feel fine, but floodgates at 3 a.m. still hurt
Mouse and keyboard work exactly as you’d expect. The UI scales cleanly, and the main frustration is the same one PC players have: placing floodgates at 3 a.m. without a blueprint.
A hundred beavers and complex water will push older Macs hard
It can. Late-game districts with a hundred beavers and complex water systems will make any Mac work for it. Stick to the default map sizes if you’re on an older Intel machine.
Can I make my own maps?
Yes. The custom-map editor is included, and there’s a healthy forum thread where people share their creations. You’ll want to test the water flow yourself before moving the whole colony in.
Press P to pause construction and stop the tiny-icon hunt
A few shortcuts save you from relentless clicking once the colony hits 50-plus beavers. Press P to pause construction on any building without hunting for the tiny pause icon. Shift+click on a workplace prioritises it, so haulers feed it materials before anything else. If you've queued twenty levee blocks and changed your mind, Ctrl+Z undoes the last placement — one at a time, but still faster than bulldozing.
The priority overlay is your friend and hardly anyone talks about it. Tap F4 to colour-code every workplace by its current priority level. Spread your haulers thin across two districts and you'll spot the ignored water pump instantly.
When a drought hits, marking a small patch of crops for harvest only stops beavers from replanting while the riverbed is dry. Find it in the crop field panel, right next to the usual plant buttons. A tiny toggle, but it stops your farmers wasting a whole cycle on seedlings that die two days later.
A Folktails player, day 12 drought
A colony-sim veteran who enjoys planning rather than crisis management picks Folktails for the breeding pods and the windmills. On a canyon map with a single water source, she spends the first six cycles building a staircase of small dams and floodgates upstream. The reservoir works — until a 12-day drought on cycle 9 empties it faster than the evaporation cheat sheet suggested.
The water wheels stop. The lumber mills go silent. With thirty beavers thirsty and the carrot stockpile shrinking, she deletes a section of the outer dam using the dynamite unlocked two cycles earlier, blasting a channel to a low-lying lake she'd written off as decorative. It's half a day's walk, so she drops a small water tank and a hauling post next to it. Four beavers spend the rest of the drought shuttling water across the map while the colony survives on grilled potatoes. The engineering doesn't feel like a tutorial — it feels like her own solution. That's where Timberborn shines.
Speed, stability and background behaviour
Day-to-day play on an Apple Silicon Mac is smooth. The simulation ticks over at 3× speed without stuttering until a district exceeds roughly 120 beavers, at which point the autosave can hitch for half a second. It's predictable, not erratic. The game hasn't crashed once across several long sessions, even when alt-tabbing to a browser full of spreadsheets. Memory use sits around 2.5 GB, which leaves room for other apps on a 16 GB machine.
Intel Macs run it, but the fan will notice. Keep the resolution at 1080p and drop shadow quality to medium before you unpause a large colony. The bottleneck isn't the graphics — it's the water physics recalculating every time a dam gate opens. For the kind of player who likes to over-engineer a reservoir with six overflow channels, that's worth knowing early.
And if you're still looking for a timberborn mac download that doesn't trip over itself on an older machine, this build handles both architectures without any extra steps. The installer is a standard package; drop it into Applications and you're done.

FAQ
What are the two beaver factions?
Folktails lean on farming and fast breeding; the Iron Teeth favour industry and need pods to reproduce. Both use the same water physics engine.
Which languages does the Mac version include?
The interface supports English, Russian, German, Spanish, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, French and Japanese.
