Plague Inc: Evolved for macOS
Description
Everyone’s played the armchair general. Plague Inc: Evolved hands you the petri dish instead. You design a disease, pick a start country, and push it towards global annihilation while humanity’s scientists race for a cure. It solves the problem of strategy games that pull their punches—this one lets the worst-case scenario play out on your terms.
| Detail | Note |
|---|---|

The Mac build is a 64-bit Intel affair and needs macOS 10.11 or later. It pulled in features that were PC-only for a while: the co-op multiplayer, the user-generated scenarios, and a noticeable bump in the visuals. Your plague doesn't just tick boxes—it evolves symptoms and resistances reactively, so you're constantly nudging its DNA to stay ahead of lockdowns and lab coats.
The game runs a bit like a grand strategy title written by an epidemiologist with a grudge, and that is exactly what makes it stick.Workflow: building a cold-climate killer
Pick Fungus on Casual difficulty and drop Patient Zero into Greenland. Bad idea on paper—low population, cold, isolated. But you want a pathogen that spreads slowly underground before anyone notices.
- Evolve Air 1 and Water 1 immediately. Fungus needs a little help crossing borders early.
- Ignore symptoms. Bank DNA points while the spore network ticks over in the background.
- Once Greenland and Iceland are solidly pink, grab Cold Resistance 1 and Drug Resistance 1. Canada will grumble but won't shut its ports yet.
- Flip the switch. Unlock Coughing, Sneezing, and Skin Lesions in one go. Infectivity spikes just as the pathogen hits the northern hemisphere's winter travel season.
- When the cure meter hits 50%, spend saved DNA on Genetic Hardening and Total Organ Failure. The world's labs panic; you close the deal.
The whole run relies on the fungus's natural ability to spread without symptoms. By the time Greenland's harbour seals are coughing, Peru is already infected and nobody traced it back.
Co-op multiplayer removes the waiting game in 1.24
Version 1.24.0.3 brought co-op multiplayer into the Mac fold. In practice, that means you and a friend can tag-team the same plague—one person handles symptom evolution, the other manages transmission and resistance. It removes the usual waiting game; you argue about DNA spend in real time instead of staring at the map alone.
The user-generated content support also landed in this build. The workshop scenarios range from lovingly crafted "what-if" outbreaks to absolute chaos. One day you're modelling a realistic avian flu, the next you're a sentient prion that only infects people named Dave. The editor isn't complicated, so the barrier to trying something daft is low. Graphics got a quiet polish too—nothing dramatic, but the disease screen reads more clearly on a Retina display, and the node bubbles in the evolution tree don't look like they were drawn in crayon anymore.
Who it actually works for
Someone who plays a lot of Crusader Kings but wants a tighter, one-hour session will settle into Plague Inc. quickly. I'm thinking of a postgraduate researcher I knew—epidemiology department, naturally—who used it to unwind after staring at real disease models all day. She played on an older Intel iMac, always the Neurax Worm, always starting in Saudi Arabia. The appeal wasn't the power fantasy. It was the way the simulation punished hubris. Forgetting to evolve heat resistance before a pathogen hit Brazil was the kind of mistake that felt personal. The game's refusal to hand you easy wins kept her coming back; it thinks like a scientist even when you're just trying to turn the whole planet green.
