Oxygen Not Included for macOS
Description
Oxygen Not Included runs on any Mac with Apple Silicon or an Intel processor. It's a colony simulation where you're handed a group of duplicants and an asteroid to dig into. Keeping them alive means watching bladder fullness, stress, and workload. Most colonists have individual traits: some are good at digging because tool use is familiar to them, others lean on creative problem solving. They'll need enough food with a surplus, and later a relaxation machine. Lower duplicant happiness leads to protests and worse task performance — it all spirals if you don't keep on top of it.
What the download includes
The game is a complete survival sandbox. You manage oxygen levels, plumbing, power grids, and temperature. The interface is available in Russian, English, Simplified Chinese, and Korean. The current build is a hotfix from Klei Entertainment, version 744825, released on 2026-07-28. It tidies up a few rough edges that had been nagging players.
Recent fixes in this build
This version resolved a particularly odd bug where duplicants would teleport to the bottom left of the world after being rescued and resuscitated. It also fixed the Masterworks skill string so it now mentions Masterpiece artwork quality. A gasket deconstruction issue that spawned the wrong element was patched, along with a liquid rendering bug on older graphics cards. Under the hood, the liquid texture array size was optimized to improve graphics memory usage, and some unused textures were removed.
Your MacBook Air will get warm in the late game
Will it run on a MacBook Air? Yes. The game works on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. On an M-series Air without a fan you'll hear the chassis get warm during late-game colonies with hundreds of tiles exposed, but it stays playable. Frame drops tend to come from pathfinding calculations once your duplicant count climbs past twelve or so, not from graphics.
Does it need an internet connection? No. Once it's installed there's no online check, no account linking, no launcher that phones home. You can play it somewhere with no Wi-Fi and it won't complain.
Is there controller support? Not natively. This is a keyboard-and-mouse game. Trackpad works fine for most digging and priority assignment, though a scroll wheel makes zooming through gas overlays less fiddly.
Some people hunt around for an oxygen not included mac download that doesn't involve extra launchers or storefronts — the disk image here is straightforward. Drag, copy, launch.
Extra duplicants in the first ten cycles drain your algae
Don't print too many duplicants early. The game offers extra colonists every few cycles through the printing pod, and new players almost always accept. Three extra mouths in the first ten cycles will outpace your algae oxygen supply and your mealwood harvest. Stick to five or six duplicants until you've got a stable bathroom loop and a carbon dioxide pit dug below the living quarters.
Watch the room overlay early. Turning a mess hall into a great hall only takes a water cooler and a potted plant, and the morale bonus buys you breathing room before stress reactions kick in. Dig a shaft three tiles wide for your main ladder — it lets gases flow past each other instead of pooling at the top or bottom of the base. Hydrogen rises, carbon dioxide sinks, and narrow corridors trap both.
Use the priority system. Set digging and building at priority 5 for your core projects, leave storage at 4. Duplicants will sweep random debris for hours if you let them, and your algae terrariums won't get filled while they're tidying up sandstone.
Pathfinding strains the CPU more than the GPU
The simulation runs on a tick-based cycle, and on any Mac from the last few years it ticks along steadily. Late-game colonies with complex plumbing, gas pipes, and automation logic push the CPU harder than the GPU — the pathfinding thread does most of the heavy lifting. On an M4 Mac mini the game loads a 200-cycle save in under fifteen seconds. Scrolling across the map is smooth even with the temperature overlay on.
Memory use stays modest. The texture optimizations in build 744825 help — the liquid texture array size was reduced, which shaves off a bit of graphics memory pressure. After a two-hour session with a mid-game colony the process sits at around 1.2 GB of RAM. No memory leaks that outlast a save-and-reload cycle. The navgrid leak that got patched in this hotfix used to cause a slow creep after several hours; that's gone now.
Stability is good. Crashes are rare unless you're running mods that haven't been updated alongside the base game. The autosave triggers at the start of each cycle and keeps the last ten, so a crash costs you minutes at worst. Most days you'll quit because you looked up and it's past midnight, not because something broke.
Fans of colony builders sometimes look for an oxygen not included torrent to grab an older build — this version includes the teleport fix and the gasket deconstruction patch, both of which caused genuine headaches in previous releases. A current hotfix spares you the 2019 build's habit of spawning the wrong element when you dismantle a gas pipe.
