Description

Finding a story-driven shooter that runs properly on Intel Macs without booting into Windows is still a headache. BioShock Remastered on Mac solves that with a native port.

Two separate builds for Russian and EFIGS-Chinese

  1. Two language builds. The download includes a Russian-language build and a separate build for English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, Japanese and Traditional Chinese.
  2. The full campaign. You arrive in Rapture, a leaking art-deco city on the ocean floor. The place is crawling with mutated splicers, Little Sisters and the armoured Big Daddies that guard them.
  3. Plasmids and weapons. You can genetically modify your DNA to shoot lightning, set traps or throw objects with telekinesis. Firearms range from a revolver to a rocket launcher and chemical sprayers.
  4. A developer museum. A quiet bonus area holds orphaned concepts and exhibits about the game's troubled development.

Playing it like a run-and-gun gets you shredded

Most early deaths don't come from Big Daddies — they come from trying to play it like a straight run-and-gun. You are not a tank. Stand in the open and three splicers will shred you while you reload.

The common errors I see:

  • Ignoring the research camera. Photographing enemies gives damage bonuses and unlocks tonics you cannot buy. It feels like busywork, but skipping it makes the mid-game far harder than it needs to be.
  • Firing plasmids at Big Daddies before you are ready. Once you attack, they do not lose interest. If you have no health kits, no hacked turrets and nowhere to break line of sight, that fight is already over.
  • Hacking everything. Hacking is useful, but a failed hack on a security bot in the middle of a firefight wastes time and health. Pick your moments or use autohacks on high-value targets.
  • Treating Little Sisters as a pure moral choice. Rescuing them gives less ADAM immediately but unlocks gifts later that close the gap and then some. Harvesting early for a quick power spike can paint you into a corner.

Performance and daily use

This is a 64-bit Intel build, not a Universal app. On a Mac with an M1 chip it runs through Rosetta 2, and in practice that means perfectly playable but not flawless. Frame rates hold steady in corridors and small rooms. Large flooded spaces with multiple splicers and particle effects can dip briefly.

Loading times on a modern SSD are short enough that a death barely interrupts the rhythm. On an older hard drive you will sit through the loading screen long enough to regret it. The game wants 27 GB of storage and does not shrink after installation, so clear space beforehand. It will run on integrated Iris Pro graphics at reduced settings, but an AMD R9 290M or Nvidia 680mx is where it stops making compromises.

Stability in the 1.0 fixed build is solid. No crashes during a full campaign run, no corrupted saves. The only quirk worth knowing is that the game occasionally forgets audio device selection after sleep — quitting and relaunching fixes it.

Keyboard shortcuts beat the radial quick-select wheel

Plasmids and weapons share a quick-select wheel, but the keyboard shortcuts are faster once you learn them. The game never pushes you to use them, so plenty of players spend the whole campaign clicking through a radial menu while a Big Daddy closes the gap.

Three other conveniences buried in the interface:

  • Hold the plasmid button to charge it. A charged Electro Bolt stuns longer. The tutorial mentions it once and never again.
  • The map marks loot you walked past. If you hover over a room on the map screen, it shows whether you left any items behind.
  • Weapon upgrade stations work on any weapon of that type. You do not lose upgrades when you pick up a fresh copy — the station applies the upgrade to the weapon slot permanently.

Everything runs in a single download. It is a straight remaster, not a remake, so expect the original's pacing and claustrophobic atmosphere with sharper textures.

FAQ

Who handled the Mac version?

The Mac port was developed by Feral Interactive Limited, the same studio that brings many high-profile games to macOS.

What is the museum of orphaned concepts?

It is an in-game gallery that displays early ideas, artwork and mechanics that were cut from BioShock before release.
