It runs as a 64-bit app on ARM and x86 Macs, and supports virtual reality if you want to place yourself fully inside the cockpit.

Ready to fly right away without the tweaking

X-Plane 12 gives you a deeper systems simulation and a plugin ecosystem that Aerofly does not try to match. But X-Plane asks you to configure, calibrate and troubleshoot before you get a smooth frame. Aerofly FS 4 runs on Vulkan out of the box and stays responsive on Apple Silicon without a single settings tweak. If you want to study a fuel system schematic, go with X-Plane. If you want to glance left at the Matterhorn while the instruments just work, Aerofly is the one.

Microsoft Flight Simulator on Mac relies on cloud streaming or Boot Camp — two things that introduce lag and friction. Aerofly installs natively. The aerial imagery is basic compared to MSFS photogrammetry cities, but the terrain mesh is solid and the whole planet is there from the first launch. No streaming queue, no data cap anxiety.

Fly offline whenever you want after one download

Does it need an internet connection to fly? No. The world scenery and elevation data sit on your drive after the initial download. You can fly offline indefinitely — useful if your sim rig is not near the router.

Will a base M1 or M2 MacBook Air cope? Yes, provided you keep texture settings sensible. The multithreaded engine and Vulkan support mean a fanless Air handles the gliders and general aviation aircraft comfortably. Airliners in dense cloud over custom scenery push harder, but the sim scales down gracefully.

Is this a stripped-down mobile port? It is not. The Mac build is the full 64-bit desktop application — the same one IPACS ships on other platforms. The cockpit interactions, flight model and scenery resolution match the desktop release.

Can I add third-party scenery or aircraft? The sim does not expose a public SDK or plugin API. You fly what ships in the hangar and see the world as supplied. That frustrates some sim veterans, but it also means the whole package stays stable across updates.
