Description

Version 3.2.0 reworks the combine station UI so crafting queues feel less like guesswork. It also lets you honk a vehicle horn to open trader doors, which saves dismounting every time you roll up with a bag full of loot.

What Details
Genre Survival, FPS, tower defence, RPG
World 5 biomes, 550+ locations, fully destructible
Zombies 60+ types with special behaviours
Items 800+ craftable and lootable
macOS 10.13+, ARM and Intel

Minute to minute, you are scavenging. Every cupboard, bin bag, and car wreck might hold a cooking pot or a handful of 9mm rounds. Nightfall brings a sprinting horde, so you spend daylight chopping trees, mining stone, and reinforcing a base you painted yourself with the in-game painting system. Character progression comes from doing: swing a club to raise blunt weapons skill, craft bandages to level up medicine. Nearly 50 buffs and illnesses complicate things. Food poisoning or a sprained leg can flip a routine loot run into a desperate limp home. Special infected keep you guessing. Some spit acid, others explode, and a few scream to summon more of their friends. If you survive seven days, you do it all again with tougher enemies. The world draws cities, lakes, caves, and mountain roads differently each time, so no two starts feel quite the same.

Drop nothing on death, and fix the early-game sting

Most defaults work fine, but a few tweaks make the early hours less frustrating.

  1. Drop nothing on death. The default has you losing everything on the toolbar. Open the advanced settings before starting a world and set Death penalty to Nothing. You can always switch back later when you know the game better.
  2. Zombie day speed to Walk. New players spend the first few days learning crafting menus, not dodging sprinters. Set daytime zombies to Walk and leave nighttime at Jog for a gentler learning curve.
  3. Loot abundance to 150%. The base loot rate assumes you know exactly where to look. Bumping it stops the first week from feeling like a starvation simulator.
  4. Air drops marked on map. Turn this on. A supply crate falling nearby is easy to miss without a map marker, and the loot inside is too good to skip.
  5. 24-hour cycle to 90 minutes. The default 60-minute day rushes you. Ninety minutes gives enough daylight to explore a house or two without panicking when the sun dips.

Base-building tinkerers who want skill trees and quest-givers

This is not a pick-up-and-play zombie shooter. It rewards people who enjoy tinkering with systems. If you liked base-building in Minecraft but wished it had skill trees and quest-givers, you are the target audience. Players who treat survival games as efficiency puzzles will sink hundreds of hours here. The loot loop is deep enough that spreadsheet-minded players end up with colour-coded storage boxes and optimised farming rotations.

Co-op groups of three or four get a different game entirely. One person handles the forge, another runs quests for the trader, someone else builds the horde-base traps. Solo play is tense and slow; co-op turns it into a noisy construction project with occasional zombie screams. PvP servers exist but the game is balanced for cooperation.

Mac users on Apple Silicon get smooth performance even on a base M4 mini. The build runs native ARM code, so fans stay quiet and frame rates hold steady during horde nights. Owners of older Intel Macs should drop view distance to medium and disable shadows before anything else.

Don’t build a base on day one—claim a house instead

  • Building a base on day one. You do not have the materials or the skills to hold off a horde. Claim a pre-built house for the first week. Reinforce the ground floor, knock out the stairs, and live on the upper floor until you find a wrench and a workbench.
  • Ignoring the trader quests. The starter quest chain hands out skill points, a bicycle, and enough dukes to buy a forge schematic. Skipping it means grinding for all of that manually.
  • Eating raw food. Raw meat fills your stomach but raises your food-poisoning chance. Cook everything. A single cooking pot found in a kitchen cabinet changes the first three days completely.
  • Fighting at night without gear. Nighttime zombies run faster and hit harder. If you are not inside a lit building by 22:00 with a firearm on your toolbar, you are gambling with a respawn penalty.
  • Mining with no structural support. Digging a tunnel straight down kills you when the ceiling collapses. The game models structural integrity, so leave support pillars or brace with wooden frames as you go.
  • Wasting repair kits on low-tier items. Repair kits use duct tape and forged iron. Use them on quality-4 tools and above. Everything lower gets scrapped or sold.
