Description

It’s for the planner who enjoys watching a guard sip poisoned wine, and the improviser who spots a chandelier chain just as the target walks underneath. You play as the best hitman in the world, dropped into globe-trotting sandboxes with a simple brief: eliminate the target. How you do it is the real game.

Eavesdropping and outfit changes drive every mission

You spend most of your time listening. Overheard conversations reveal routines, security flaws, or a target's allergy. You change outfits constantly—a waiter here, a bodyguard there—to slip into restricted areas without a firefight. The actual kill can be loud, but the setup is quiet.

The toolkit of a professional

Your inventory is absurdly versatile. You might garrotte someone in a bathroom, then escape dressed as a chef. Or you could plant a remote explosive inside a golf ball. A sniper rifle works from a bell tower. Expired sauce, if slipped into the right dish, is surprisingly lethal. The katana is not subtle, but it is final. The game runs on ARM and 64-bit Intel Macs.

First days: two things that save frustration

Turn off mission hints in the gameplay settings before you finish the tutorial levels. The game defaults to hand-holding waypoints that point you straight at the scripted kill. Switching them to "minimal" or "off" turns each location back into a puzzle you solve yourself—which is where the real replay value lives.

Save manually before you experiment. The autosave system is generous, but it triggers at checkpoints, not before you try throwing a fire extinguisher at a fleeing motorcade. A quick manual save lets you test absurd ideas without replaying fifteen minutes of setup.

Cursor stays locked to one screen in multi-monitor setups

The game grabs the whole screen by default, but it behaves well in a multi-monitor setup. If you keep a browser or notes app open on a second display, the cursor stays locked to the game screen—no accidental clicks drifting into Finder. On Apple Silicon machines, it runs without Rosetta overhead.

Spotify or Apple Music in the background will drown out guard chatter, so pause your music during the reconnaissance phase. Once you know the patrol routes, music is fair game. The in-game audio mix is clean enough that you don't need to fiddle with system sound settings.

Iterating on a single assassination instead of following a story

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided shares the disguise-and-infiltration DNA, but it's a cyberpunk RPG first and a stealth sandbox second. Prague's hubs are dense, yet you're following a story rather than iterating on a single assassination. HITMAN gives you one target and a clockwork location; Deus Ex gives you a conspiracy and skill trees.

Dishonored 2 offers supernatural tools—blink teleports, possession, time-stop—which make evasion feel faster and more vertical. HITMAN grounds you in a believable world with no magic escape button. If you enjoy the planning phase more than the execution, HITMAN's methodical pace wins out.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is a top-down tactical stealth game set in Edo Japan. You control a team with defined roles, issuing commands in a paused planning mode. It scratches a similar "observe, plan, execute" itch, but the isometric view and character-swapping feel nothing like inhabiting Agent 47 directly. HITMAN's third-person immersion is the differentiator.
