Company of Heroes 2 for macOS
Description
Company of Heroes 2 is a World War II real-time strategy game where you command squads of troops across a frozen Eastern Front and beyond. You hold territory, manage resources, and try to outflank the enemy before they do the same to you.
Minute by minute
- You spend most of your time capturing points on the map to generate fuel and munitions. No points, no tanks.
- Infantry squads take cover behind walls and craters. A squad caught in the open melts in seconds.
- You reinforce depleted squads near half-tracks or at your base. Keeping veterans alive matters more than building fresh units.
- Armoured vehicles have side and rear armour weaker than the front. A single shot from the wrong angle ends an engagement.
Campaigns and factions
The single-player campaign puts you in charge of the Red Army. If you pick up the Ardennes Assault expansion, you get an 18-battle US Army campaign with company management between missions. For multiplayer, the base game gives you Soviet and Wehrmacht forces. The Western Front Armies add Oberkommando West and US Forces to the roster.
Let’s walk through a typical mission. You’re playing as the Soviets on a winter map. The first thing you do is send an engineer squad to cap the nearest fuel point. While they’re on it, you build a conscript squad and send them to a stone wall overlooking a likely approach. You’ve played this map before — you know the German player will push for the high ground on the left.
Three minutes in, the snow picks up. Visibility drops. You hear a Panzergrenadier squad before you see it. Your conscripts open fire from cover, pinning them. You reinforce immediately from a halftrack you’ve brought up. While the infantry fight holds, you save requisition for a T-34. You don’t commit it yet. You edge it around the right flank, using a ruined factory for cover. The German player overextends a Panzer IV. Your T-34 lands two rear hits and it’s over. The match continues for another twenty minutes, but that was the hinge.
One machine-gun nest in a doorway versus blocks of spearmen
Compared to Total War: WARHAMMER II, Company of Heroes 2 works on a much smaller scale. You’re not shuffling blocks of spearmen across a continent; you’re placing one machine-gun nest in a specific doorway. That cramped focus feels tense in a way large-scale strategy often doesn’t. Where WARHAMMER’s battles can run on autopilot for stretches, every engagement here demands your attention.
Call to Arms is a closer cousin, with direct control over individual soldiers and vehicles. It gives you a first-person option Company of Heroes 2 doesn’t. That sounds appealing until you’re trying to manage a whole map through a rifle sight. Company of Heroes 2 keeps you in the command tent. You make decisions, your units execute them — imperfectly, sometimes fatally. That layer of friction makes things feel like a battle report, not a shooting gallery.
Hearts of Iron IV covers the same war but from a grand-strategy altitude. You draw arrows on a map and wait months for an offensive to resolve. Company of Heroes 2 puts you in the snow with the squad that has to hold the crossroads for thirty more seconds. Both are about supply and positioning, but one shows you the infantryman’s face and the other shows you a spreadsheet. For sheer tactical immersion, the tighter lens wins.
Worth it if you enjoy strategy where positioning and cover matter more than build orders.
